About Sam Ekwurtzel
Sam Ekwurtzel makes enigmatic sculptures that often have the appearance of husks, ghosts or chrysalises. Often employing mundane objects that are used to demarcate barriers such as bollards, manhole covers and metal traffic signs, Ekwurtzel shrouds the objects, coating them in a ceramic material and firing them in an oven. The metal within the ceramic is liquified and slowly melts away, as if emerging from its chrysalis, leaving a flow of molten lava to ooze and pool before drying and creating new abstract forms. The fluidity and unboundedness of this effect undermines the strict frontiers and partitions of the public space represented by the objects Ekwurtzel collects. Written by Goldsmiths CCA
