About Ben Schumacher
Exploring the relationship between the digital and physical realms and the flow of information in the Internet age, Ben Schumacher creates strange, uncanny installations composed of juxtapositions and dissonances. The artist’s multimedia settings feature IKEA furniture, energy drinks, 3D printers, sketches, cheeses, pool tables, restaurant replicas, and absurdist sculptures. The running theme of his works is that of dislocation, a strange discrepancy between physicality and representation. By connecting objects that do not go together or placing familiar artefacts into unfamiliar constellations, his installations delicately translate statistics and diagrams into unexpected physicalities. From undersea telecommunication infrastructure to cheese production to office architecture and cybernetics, Schumacher tackles contemporary concerns by revealing disconnections inherent in today’s connected world.
