About Joseph Yaeger
Joseph Yaeger works in realist painting. Yaeger’s process involves sourcing imagery, from YouTube to newspapers to cinema stills, and transforming them into impressively realistic watercolours, thereby presenting a kaleidoscope of snippets of contemporary social landscape. In that way, when one looks at his work, one may feel an odd feeling of déjà vu, with paintings evoking memories one may never have. In his solo exhibition, Doublespeak, at Project Native Informant, Yaeger showed works that explore the extent to which language is an accurate expressive function. Through drawing a parallel between language and glass, the artist shows how both are transparent and oblique, clear and distorted. With human emotions being both revealed and concealed in mirrors and magnifying glasses, Yaeger’s paintings are uncanny in their subconscious potential. Joseph Yaeger, born in Montana, US, in 1986, practised writing prior to pursuing a career in visual arts.
