About Mika Rottenberg
Through humour, seduction, confusion and absurdity, Buenos Aires-born, New York-based artist Mika Rottenberg explores notions of labour, production, global economy and hyper-capitalist existence. Working in film, sculpture and architectural installation, she creates strange and chaotic universes where representation and real-life are interviewed in a way to reveal the absurdity of the human condition. Rottenberg’s works are inhabited by plastic, pearls and ponytails, vivid colours, deformed noses and fake flowers. Her absurdist films, depicting protagonists performing tasks in strange factories, are often accompanied by even stranger sculptures and installations. Describing her work as “social surrealism” and drawing inspiration from Marxist theory, the artist eschews images and narratives to avoid normative logic and to reveal reality as being stranger than fiction.
