About Ryan Gander
Ryan Gander works with many different ideas, media and materials. His work spans sculpture, installation, film, performance, graphic design, writing, typefaces, architecture, publications, interventions and lectures. Although his work is concept-led, the artist describes himself as “a sort of neo-conceptualist, Proper-‘Gander’-ist, amateur philosopher”. Common threads explored by Gander include the interrogation and separation of language, knowledge and assumption, which he achieves through creating enigmatic, ambiguous work. He uses the notion of absence to imbue his pieces – and their viewers – with a sense that something is missing, that intuition must fill in the gaps left by perception. By placing the onus on the viewer this way, Gander questions the process and absurdity of meaning-production in contemporary art.
