About Gray Wielebinski
Gray Wielebinski’s practice, characterised by its hybridity and dexterity, uses performance, collage, installation, sculpture and video to confront the diverse yet interlinked themes of mythology, gender, identity, memory and nationhood. Having grown up in Dallas, Texas, the artist is interested in investigating mythology and its formation through the lens of Americana. They believe that 'myths past and present can tell us a lot about power and who is able to craft and retell narratives. So, I think it's supremely relevant and necessary to revisit and interrogate them and make our own.' Wielebinski’s use of collage – and the ‘soft sculptures’ that they often make – is notable, as the medium allows for bodies to be deconstructed, dissected, and refigured, creating new combinations and assemblages that defy visual codes and recognisable iconography, and form a heterogeneous utopia of ambiguous beings.
