About Jay Tan
Jay Tan works across sculpture, installation and video, employing DIY techniques to experiment with the potential of decoration as a medium. Featuring dressed-up toy cars, found objects like necklaces, glasses or cardboard, light installations and GIFs, Tan’s practice is playful in colour and variety. Vibrant and dynamic, Tan’s works continuously show the preciousness and necessity of that which is decorative and conventionally disregarded. Now based in the Netherlands but having grown up in the UK, the artist and educator is interested in exploring the mechanisms of British colonial history, in Malaysia specifically, and its role in bringing together their parents, thereby making a considerable impact on Tan’s worldview.
