About Monster Chetwynd
Monster Chetwynd, previously known as Marvin Gaye Chetwynd and Spartacus Chetwynd, is a Turner Prize-nominated performance artist who works in performance, sculpture, installation, video and painting. Chetwynd’s video and performance works often involve handmade props and costumes, and employ the artist’s friends and relatives as performers. A keen gatherer of source material, Chetwynd’s influences are diverse and unpredictable. Just some names from a broad list of citations include Chaucer’s 'The Canterbury Tales', Doris Lessing’s novel 'The Grass Is Singing', Milton’s 'Paradise Lost', and Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 Studio Ghibli-animated 'My Neighbor Totoro'. Chetwynd remixes, restages and repurposes historical cultural events through the lens of these references, making her audience question the limits of interpretation, authenticity and originality, as well as the blurred line between fiction and reality.
