About Rabiya Choudhry
Working in painting, drawing, text and murals, Rabiya Choudhry explores themes of cultural displacement, identity, politics and mental health through the lens of her personal experiences. The artist treats her vibrant, bold and graphic works as a means of expressing, understanding and working through the painful experiences of human life. The contrast between the joyfulness of her colour palette and the subject matter displays a dark sense of humour, which is used as a tool to convey complex political, societal and personal issues. Choudhry’s work shows inspiration from psychedelic art, B-movie posters, comic books, and folk art. The greatest influence in her work however, is, to put in the artist’s works, “a specific Scottish type of dark humour” which is “dark as hell”.
