About Scott King
Scott King, a graphic designer by trade, creates humorous, satirical works that are politically dissident and sardonic by nature. In ‘Marxist Disco (Cancelled)’, King’s 2008 exhibition at Kunstverein München, the artist’s screen-printed reimagination of the ubiquitous image of Che Guevara, which instead features Cher, stretched around three metres across the gallery wall. The image, reminiscent of that plastered on an advertising hoarding, asked viewers to question the authorial intent, mass-production, dissemination and commodification of such images. King is also critical of the insular contemporary art world and the sycophancy and obsequiousness of those operating within it, reflected in 2013’s You’re My Favourite Artist, an electronic music single with a spoken word voice over uttering a slew of saccharine art-speak-laden references to contemporary artists.
