About Rosalind Nashashibi
Making her way back to the medium of painting after initially emerging as an erudite and distinguished filmmaker, Rosalind Nashashibi takes canonical painters such as Pierre Bonnard and Paul Gauguin as her starting point. She subtly shifts and displaces the male-gaze-led perspective of such artists, painting scenes that are at once quotidian and ethereal. Everyday objects or bathing body parts are painted with an organic, ethereal softness and translucent, multi-layered colours that bleed into one another. Nashashibi’s 16mm film works – sometimes made with her long-term collaborator Lucy Skaer under the name Nashashibi/Skaer – are non-linear and rich with subtexts that uncover individual and collective histories.
