Patricia Perez Eustaquio

Patricia Perez Eustaquio works with an organic mixture of painting, drawing, sculpture, textile and installation, using these media to explore the ever-evolving dynamics between craft, design and fine art. Perez Eustaquio states that her practice is guided by appetites and consumption, questioning how cultural tastes in particular are manufactured. Through using everyday domestic materials and items such as lace, rattan chairs or shoes, she’s able to trace the social histories and economic ties embedded within these objects, repositioning these habitual materials in a gallery context. Her well known ‘Ghost Sculptures’ for example are crafted from a combination of ‘high’ and ‘lowly’ materials. These hollow busts are constructed with latticed resin and lace, and draped in opulent fabrics, posing the question to viewers of how we fabricate our own identities through design, or perhaps, is our sense of self crafted through external cultural tides? In her paintings, Perez Eustaquio replicates specific details of old master paintings, perhaps a bird’s feather, a flower, or a vase, pedestalling these smaller details with their own canvas–again troubling hierarchies put in place by art history. Tender, lyrical and arresting, Perez Eustaquio’s work continues to destabilize cultural boundaries, urging viewers to reconsider their perceptions of both specific materials and wider socio-political currents.
