Donald Moffett

Donald Moffett is widely known for his textured monochromatic paintings. He incorporates traditional oil on canvas with sculptural elements and video projections to create works that explore social and political issues. Using the canvas as a representation of the body, he manipulates it by cutting, flaying, or perforating the surface, as well as using sound and light to create a Renaissance-like atmosphere in his work, while also exploring modern-day topics such as gay rights and homosexuality in the military. His work is both overtly political, such as his 1980's posters that criticized Ronald Reagan, and in 'DC' (2004), video images of famous places in Washington DC, the Watergate Hotel and J Edgar Hoover FBI Building, were projected onto a canvas coated with aluminum paint, and more subtle and refined, such as his canvas paintings. Moffett is also a founding member of the late 80s AIDS activist collective Gran Fury, and his abstract paintings reflect his thoughts on death, desire, power, and scandal.
