About Fabian Marcaccio
Fabian Marcaccio rose to prominence in the 1990s for his experimentations with the expanded field of painting. Blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture, his works released painting from its normative two-dimensional realm. Stretcher bars broke free in his early works, he undertook large-scale environmental murals, he collaborated with architects to create installations and more recently, he’s incorporated more digital and industrial techniques such as 3d-printing and animation to further advance the mutational capacity of his paintings, relabelling them ‘paintants’. Silicone and oil paint comingle in his manipulations of the painted surface, bringing gestural markings into a sculptural register. The works are intriguing and magnetic, oscillating between recognisable forms or motifs and pixelated, abstracted structures. Marcaccio’s experiments are heavily grounded within the genealogy of modernist art history, with titles such as ‘From Ready Made to Ready Grow’ reflecting his indebtedness to those who have previously stretched the capacities of painting and sculpture. Through his continual amalgamations of analogue and digital processes, his hybrid practice continues to chart the enduring possibilities of painting in the contemporary.
