About Rirkrit Tiravanija
Rirkrit Tiravanija is a highly esteemed artist who is renowned for his innovative and interdisciplinary approach to art-making. He incorporates a wide variety of media, including painting, printmaking, video, photography, mixed-media assemblage, and music. His practice is characterised by a rejection of traditional art objects in favour of participatory installations, public and private performances, teaching, and other forms of public service and social action. Central to Tiravanija's artistic vision is a desire to bring people together and foster communal connections through the sharing of personal and collective traditions. This approach has been described as "relational aesthetics" and reflects a shift in avant-garde art practices in the 1990s towards incorporating diverse cultural spaces, practices, and temporalities. Tiravanija's work challenges and expands the social dimension of art, inviting people from all walks of life to engage in shared rituals and actions within the spaces he constructs. His work often addresses broad social and political issues that are not adequately covered in Western media, such as protests against the Thai government.
