About Gvantsa Jgushia
Gvantsa Jgushia (born in 1999, Zugdidi, Georgia) lives and works between Amsterdam (NE) and Tbilisi (GE). Gvantsa Jgushia is a visual artist and a writer working in various mediums, such as installation, sculpture, video, drawing, and olfactory medium, currently based in Amsterdam. Through her research-based practice, she examines rural traditions of healing and mourning, animistic beliefs evident in remnant ritual offerings, and plant-based curing efforts, together with modern-day technology and its approach to the human body, which often translate into larger-scale installations resembling a theatrical set, as her spatial thinking methods finds roots in Georgian stage design tradition. Jgushia’s work grapples with the material and mental tendencies of occupying a space, feelings of abandonment, translocation, and extraction. Her three-dimensional works integrate unconventional material choices and unfit pairings to emphasize the aspects of absurdity and forging.
