About Mark Handforth
Mark Handforth's work primarily focuses on the sculptural language of urban environments and the everyday artifacts that inhabit them. Using materials such as spray-painted metals, lit candles, and glowing neon, Handforth's pieces evoke urban landscapes, characterized by a post-punk aesthetic and utilitarian minimalism. Rather than simply appropriating these objects, he engages in a process of either altering their shape or amplifying their scale, thereby creating ambiguity around whether these pieces should be classified as readymades. His sculptural installations act as spatial interventions, eliciting unique interactions within existing environments and providing new perspectives on familiar spatial elements. The works often showcase dislocated, everyday objects that are recontextualized through unexpected forms and configurations. Iconic pieces in his portfolio feature streetlamps, traffic signs, and communication devices that have undergone various types of physical distortions—such as buckling, twisting, and drooping—in whimsical arrangements. These seemingly degraded forms are paradoxically endowed with a certain elegance, a result of Handforth's meticulous craftsmanship. This duality establishes a nuanced balance between wry humor and evocative pathos.
