About weecolors
Weecolors works with drawing, watercolours and wood carving to create tender portrayals of animals and flowers. Developing an illustrative visual register, Weecolors anthropomorphises petals, horses and ferns, using these drawings to illustrate his own internal feelings. Some are joyful and effervescent, whilst others occupy a more melancholic space. Tackling the dominance of heteronormative behaviours in contemporary society, Weecolors injects a camp aesthetic into his works, bringing to life queer ways of being via flowers and farmyard animals. Swans are carved in loving embraces, a puppy takes the form of a joyful cloud, or a lily flower hangs its head in solitude. The artist explains how working outside of human figures allows them to really dig into their internal emotions, and this dissociation with the human form reflects wider society’s dismissal of queer communities. The graphic, cartoonish sensibility and the subject matter links Weecolors to artists such as Tom of Finland, yet the whimsical delivery of these watercolours carves a more sensitive space for Weecolors to experiment within.
