About Tai Shani
Existing in-between the familiar and unfamiliar, Tai Shani’s sculptural installations depict and explore fantastical utopias, post-patriarchal realities and the structure of subjectivity. Also working in performance, film, photography and experimental text, Shani is inspired by narratives and histories of disparate and unknown sources. The artist explores the feminine otherness in works such as DC: Semiramis (2018), in which Shani adapted Christine de Pizan’s pioneering feminist book The Book of the City of Ladies (1405). Joint 2019 Turner Prize winner, alongside artists Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Helen Cammock and Oscar Murillo, Shani experiments with shapes and scales, speaking the language of excess in the shades of pink and purple.
