About Galatée Martin
Galatée Martin’s practice intersperses painting, incorporating acrylic, pigment, and airbrush, as well as textile and garments, drawing, and murals. Her references are mixed, reworked, and combined to the point that she generates a new visual sphere. She creates assemblages of images to which she is drawn both unconsciously and impulsively. Through pattern-making, she draws from existing images to produce something new on the canvas, almost like constructing a garment. Central to her mode of working is the connection between painting and fabrics. Her uncoated linen canvases are treated as skin-like, raw, untouched surfaces onto which she can create freely. Her androgynous figures exist outside of the gender binary, intermingling in otherworldly environments. They embody both masculine and feminine qualities, or a fluid combination of both. They dance across the canvas, allowing us access into their psyches, their inner voices seeping from the surface of the canvas.
