About Jesse Wine
The notion of chance plays a large part in Jesse Wine’s practice: the firing of ceramics is never an exact science. But the artist encourages this randomness through a complex alchemy of colours. Wine’s lustrous ceramics are rendered with multiple layers of colourful glaze, each application adding a different complexion and hue to the forms. Some of Wine’s vessels are outwardly functional such as vases, shoes or receptacles, but they are never ‘used’. Others, such as ‘Young man red I’ (2014) are amorphous and enigmatic objects, reminiscent of sculptural Frank Auerbach paintings. Wine also creates figurative assemblages, exploded human forms such as ‘Young man red II’ (2014), composed of a hat, waistcoat, shorts and shoes, with a mug and a plate of pasta, all hanging separately yet connected, like a mobile or a puppet, the visual shorthand of an unseen body.
