Biography

Agnes Waruguru deals with themes of materiality, touch, and toxic embodiment, questioning ideas of the natural in relation to marginalized communities. She often examines the entanglement of land, rivers, and migratory flow through history, mythology, and flora, reflecting on the complex relationships between bodies and place. Waruguru’s artistic journey began with painting, transforming static canvases into living, breathing narratives through experimental approaches. Often layering textures and materials, she constructs environments that blur the boundaries between stillness and motion, reality and imagination. Her works frequently address the tensions of modern existence—violence, displacement, memory, and the fragility of human experience—while retaining an intimate, poetic quality. She often draws from mythology, folklore, and personal memory, reinterpreting them within fractured narratives that echo the uncertainties of contemporary life. By combining material experimentation with immersive composition, Waruguru stages spaces where the ordinary and the surreal intersect, allowing unresolved emotions and histories to surface. Her work reflects a sustained inquiry into transformation and vulnerability, positioning art as a vehicle for empathy and a means to illuminate the complexities of human existence. ...
