Grappling with themes of awkwardness, embarrassment, anger and confusion, through the mediums of sculpture, performance, installation, video, painting and cartoon drawing, Bedwyr Williams’ work uncovers the idiosyncrasies of human behaviour, conjuring up weird situations, strange environments and unusual dilemmas. Always humorous and often tragic, Williams – whose autobiographical practice deals with his own existence – extrapolates neuroses into vast anxieties that pull in the viewer, inspiring in them both empathy and laughter. Recently using Instagram as a vehicle for his cartoons and their acerbic wit and satirical bite, Williams has aimed at the London art scene and its existence online, mocking what the artist calls its ‘really weird fakeness’. ...
