Biography

EJ Hill works across durational performance, installation, painting, neon, and collage, using these diverse artistic methods to unlearn and dismantle coded behaviours and societal structures which are built into institutional environments, specifically academic spaces. Hill studied with Andrea Fraser and Jennifer Bolande whilst at UCLA which undoubtedly feeds his playful, explorative techniques and the currents of institutional critique which pulsate through his works. Commonly working collaboratively with photographers and labourers who help build and document his extended site interventions and performances, there’s a sense of healing or catharsis which filters through each of his projects. Collectively Hill, his collaborators and eventually his audiences encounter and deconstruct the hierarchical structures which pervade our everyday habitats. Outside of these performative pieces, Hill also creates gestural, abstracted paintings and collages, inscribing them with colloquial phrases or clichés. His neon works host similar expressions, illuminating the ironies that pervade motivational idioms found within alleged egalitarian environments such as schools, colleges, and universities. ...
