Biography

Emma Kohlmann’s practice weaves together painting, drawing, printmaking, zines, and design, creating a vibrant dialogue between mediums and ideas. Drawing from an array of influences, including Greek and Roman mythology, folk art, and zine-making cultures, her work is driven by an intuitive sensibility and an open approach to knowledge. By reinterpreting the past into new translations, an emotional and optimistic embrace pervades throughout her work. Kohlmann's paintings often feature anthropomorphic figures, flora, and fauna coexisting in spiritual spheres, free of hierarchies. These works are characterized by their gestural lines, vibrant colors, and a sense of fluidity that invites viewers into a world where the boundaries between human and non-human entities are blurred. Her approach to art-making is deeply personal and rooted in a DIY ethos. Kohlmann began creating zines during her time at Hampshire College, where she studied subjects such as philosophy and feminist theory. This background informs her work, which often explores themes of identity, gender, and the body. Through her diverse body of work, Emma Kohlmann continues to explore and expand the possibilities of visual storytelling, creating spaces where viewers can engage with the complexities of human experience and the natural world. ...
