Biography

Erin Manning works at the crossroads of philosophy, aesthetics, and politics, emphasizing experimental approaches to pedagogy and the economy. Her work is deeply attentive to relational processes, exploring how collaborative and participatory encounters can generate new forms of knowledge and experience. Manning’s artistic practice is largely textile-based and materially nuanced, emphasizing the subtle textures and qualities that emerge through tactile engagement. She investigates how perception unfolds in unexpected, lateral ways, creating works that invite participants to experience life through a heightened attention to materiality and relationality. A key aspect of her practice engages synesthetic experiences of touch, informed by recent collaboration with the ProTactile movement in DeafBlind culture and language. Her tactile works include large-scale hangings created through diverse techniques such as tufting, hooking, knotting, and weaving, emphasizing sensory encounter and embodied understanding. Her current research, framed under the concept of 3e, explores the transversality of social, environmental, and conceptual ecologies. Projects such as a land-based initiative north of Montreal experiment with living and learning in situ, drawing on legacies from SenseLab to examine how collectivity is formed in more-than-human interactions with worlds in the making. ...
