Biography

Exploring a wide range of mediums—including painting, artist books, textiles, printmaking, and murals—Jia Sung channels her Chinese heritage to create work that provocatively engages with cultural narratives. She weaves Chinese mythology and Buddhist symbolism into her practice, using these rich traditions to challenge and rethink conventional ideas surrounding femininity, queerness, and otherness, inviting viewers to reconsider identity through a complex and layered lens. Drawing on the Chinese zhiguai tradition—known for its tales of the strange and supernatural—Sung creates hybrid figures that combine human and animal characteristics. These figures inhabit both domestic and social realms, challenging fixed identities and exploring fluidity in existence. Her use of traditional crafts like embroidery, beadwork, and tapestry is woven into her paintings, resulting in richly layered, immersive pieces. Her work blurs the line between the everyday and the mystical, inviting audiences to rethink cultural narratives and the complexity of identity. Through this fusion of myth and materiality, Sung offers a thoughtful reflection on heritage, belonging, and transformation in today’s world. ...
