Biography

Jorunn Hancke Øgstad reimagines abstraction by combining painting and sculpture with unexpected materials and methods. She uses fabric dye, resin, and plastics on unprimed canvas, incorporating effects reminiscent of watercolor, spray paint, and printmaking within a single composition. By combining approaches drawn from expressionist, street, and pop art traditions, Øgstad develops a distinctive visual language that bridges historical and contemporary practices. Her work reflects a deep engagement with both past and present artistic influences, from 19th-century spiritual abstraction to contemporary female artists. Many of her pieces utilize bleaching and blocking techniques, rendering sections translucent to allow light to pass through the surface, creating a sense of depth and luminosity. These interventions highlight the materiality of her media, encouraging viewers to consider texture, color, and spatial relationships simultaneously. Through her innovative use of materials, processes, and layered compositions, Øgstad reimagines the possibilities of abstraction, offering works that are at once visually dynamic, tactile, and conceptually rich. ...
