Biography

Lily Wong draws from an extensive range of influences, including Eastern mythology, Japanese woodblock prints, Mughal-illustrated manuscripts, and the vibrant, nostalgic imagery of pop culture and cartoons. These sources converge in her figurative works on paper, where her subjects transcend mere representation to become vessels of emotion and experience, navigating dreamlike spaces and fluid, often disorienting notions of time. Her compositions are also deeply informed by the traditions and techniques of Western painting, creating a rich interplay between diverse artistic lineages. Central to Wong’s practice is her engagement with paper, a medium that reflects her connection to Sumi ink painting and her Asian heritage. This material allows her to explore themes of memory, intimacy, desire, and the yearning for the ephemeral. Her work bridges past and present, fusing Eastern and Western aesthetics to construct visual narratives that are at once delicate, layered, and evocative. Through her paintings, Wong investigates the depth of human emotion, capturing vulnerability, longing, and the subtleties of the psyche. Her compositions unfold as immersive journeys, where color, form, and narrative converge to reveal the unspoken layers of personal and poetic introspection. ...
