Mairikke Dau creates utterly bewitching and disorienting paintings which pull her viewers into a bizarre, dreamlike realm. Scale is thrown out of the window, as outlines of hands tower over animated houses. Snail shells, spirals and moons populate illustrative seas, all brought to life in concrete, bright colors. Emulating the carefree character of doodling, Dau brings to life the sihouettes by painstakingly applying layer after layer of oil paint without rolling out artist tape in order to achieve a crystal sharp effect. The graphic sensibility of these pieces echoes the assured quality of pop art, whilst the bold, effervescent palette is also reminiscent of early Expressionist and Fauvist styles. The dense layering of imagery within each painting is enrapturing, the task at hand is to perhaps find a lineage between all these signifiers, but the overwhelming emotion translated is a sense of pure joy. ...
