Biography

Phumzile Khanyile is an award-winning South African photographer and activist. Khanyile's practice focuses on her own interiority, women's lives and sexual politics. Her work consists of self-portraits with a candid, instant aesthetic and, more recently, photographic negatives accompanied by hand-drawn images and symbols. To this day, violence and childhood trauma continue to fuel her creativity. According to the photographer, looking back allows her to move forward; "many of the clues to who I really am lie somewhere in the past", which she tries to evoke through her photography. ...
