Biography

Regina Parra’s practice is highly interdisciplinary, spanning painting, video, sculpture, writing, performance, and choreography. Over the past fifteen years, her work has increasingly embraced large-scale, immersive installations, often created in collaboration with artists from dance, music, costume design, and cinema. Theater remains a foundational influence in her work: before turning to visual arts, she worked as assistant director for Brazilian theater director Antunes Filho, an experience that fostered a lasting engagement with performance and the dramatic structures of Greek tragedy. As a woman working in Brazil, a country with alarming rates of gender-based violence, Parra foregrounds a feminist perspective in her practice. Much of her work focuses on the social body of women, presenting it as a site of affirmation, resilience, and potential power. Her research and creative production examine the intersections of colonialism and capitalism, exploring their enduring injustices and the historical violence inflicted upon women. Through her interdisciplinary approach, Parra interrogates these systemic forces while crafting work that is at once intimate, political, and performative. ...
