Shaun Motsi
Biography
Shaun Motsi navigates complex questions of Black subjectivity, identity, and representation through a multidisciplinary practice that includes painting, video, installation, and writing. Drawing from his experiences across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Canada, he critically examines how cultural narratives are constructed, inherited, and transformed within contemporary visual culture. His work disrupts conventional storytelling by weaving together language, symbolism, and humor, creating layered pieces that challenge viewers to reconsider established ideas of identity and power. Motsi’s practice probes the structures that shape and circulate narratives, particularly focusing on how Black identity is represented and perceived. Central to his art is an engagement with affect and proximity, using motifs and precepts to explore the dynamics of cultural production and worldmaking.
