XU ZHEN®

XU ZHEN® is a leading figure of his generation of Chinese contemporary artists, internationally recognized for his innovative and provocative practice. Active on the global art scene since the late 1990s, his work spans installation, sculpture, painting, photography, and performance. He often addresses themes of cultural identity, globalization, and consumerism, challenging conventional expectations while questioning the dynamics of cultural exchange and historical representation. XU ZHEN® initially explored these ideas through autonomous performances and videos, critically examining societal shifts in post-Mao China. Later, he transformed his practice into a brand with the creation of MadeIn Company and XU ZHEN®, producing works that often combine conceptual and pop strategies. His sculptures, paintings, and installations frequently juxtapose iconographies from disparate cultures and historical periods, creating hybrid forms that highlight collisions of meaning, the reinterpretation of symbols, and the transformative effects of globalization.
