Biography

Cary Kwok creates detailed drawings, rendered with ballpoint pen and overlayed with acrylic paint, that explore human sexuality, religion, fashion, fetish and art history. Kwok’s subject matter is broad, but common throughout his work are exuberant phalluses and headshot portraits of male figures – both cartoon and human, but always hyper-masculinised – reaching orgasmic climax and ejaculating over their own bodies. While the more overblown works are perhaps reminiscent of artists like Tom of Finland, Kwok’s series of drawings of ornate, Rococo-era shoes, furnished with bright acrylic legs, and his painstaking depictions of old-Hollywood celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn perhaps recall Andy Warhol. ...
