Dineo Seshee Bopape's installations immerse viewers in multisensory experiences that intertwine memory, spirituality, and the earth. Drawing from her upbringing in Limpopo and education in Durban, Amsterdam, and New York, she crafts environments using organic materials like soil, clay, and ash to evoke ancestral histories and suppressed knowledge. Her work often incorporates sound, video, and found objects, creating spaces that challenge linear narratives and invite introspection. Bopape's installations are not merely visual; they engage multiple senses, encouraging a deeper connection to the themes she explores. Central to her practice is the exploration of how materiality and form can convey complex histories and emotions. By using natural materials, she connects with the land and its stories, offering a platform for dialogue about identity, belonging, and resistance. Through her art, Bopape creates spaces that are both reflective and transformative, prompting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of history, memory, and the world around them. ...
Dineo Seshee Bopape: Artworks
Based in a 360 sqm gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town, blank was founded by Jonathan Garnham as a project space in 2005 and transitioned into a commercial gallery during 2012. With an exhibition programme that has a reputation for shaping the discourse around contemporary art in South(ern) Africa, and participation in prominent local and international art fairs, we seek to place our artists' work in a wide range of private and institutional collections. In addition, blank continues to promote the visual arts in our community through ongoing projects that support the sector. ...
