Reba Maybury

Reba Maybury’s interdisciplinary practice explores themes of power, labor, and gender dynamics through the lens of BDSM and sex work. Operating under the persona of Mistress Rebecca, she subverts traditional hierarchies by directing male submissives to produce art under her command, transforming them into instruments of her vision and challenging conventional ideas of authorship and agency. Her work critically examines the transactional nature of relationships and the commodification of intimacy, often incorporating elements of humor and subversion. Maybury uses art to expose and interrogate the power structures that govern interpersonal dynamics, focusing on the intersections of desire, control, and societal norms. In her recent projects, she has reinterpreted historical artworks related to sex work and state control, using collaborative methods that emphasize the role of submission and dominance within artistic creation. Established in 2020, Fitzpatrick Gallery is focused on an international program of curated projects in site-specific venues worldwide, and on-site exhibitions at their primary location in Paris, inaugurated in September 2021 in the Marais gallery district at 123 rue de Turenne. They are involved in every level of production with their represented artists, working in close collaboration with institutions, publishing houses, advisory firms, and other partners.
