Audrey Gair

Heavily influenced by her immediate environment, Audrey Gair works in a neo-pointillistic abstract style, consciously referencing art-historical movements and compositional structures within her paintings. The décor within her home, or the streets of New York City provide ample inspiration for Gair to create these magnetic oil paintings which riff off various modernist styles, blending aspects of Impressionism, Expressionism and Abstraction. Having worked as an art teacher, Gair has firsthand experiences of introducing these differing eras to her pupils, summarizing the key ethos of these movements and prompting her students to quickly create something echoing this style. The results to her were always magical, in equal parts sincere and light-hearted. Within her own paintings, Gair aims to emulate this feeling of uninhibitedness, generating works which capture the true essence of a particular habitat, without depending on figurative truths. Working in a similar tradition to Feminist artists such as Rosemarie Mayer, Adrian Piper, and Eleanor Antin, Gair interprets her paintings as diaristic mementos of her daily life.
