Employing animation, sound, performance, and video games, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley constructs narratives that honor and amplify Black trans lives. Her practice weaves together personal histories and imaginative narratives, creating re-envisioned accounts of trans lives while constructing an ongoing archive that honors those who have been historically erased, bridging past, present, and future. Central to Brathwaite-Shirley’s work are questions of digital space, representation, and accessibility, particularly regarding the exclusion and marginalization of Black and Brown trans bodies within virtual environments. Technology serves as both medium and subject, allowing the artist to investigate gaming as an artistic and educational platform.
