An island is all surrounded by water In the morning foreboding Quickly solved by dripping A shower, you know A slow crawl to the park Wait first meat A coffee A hill A roundabout A breeze on the lake A larking body of water, once screaming once babbling, once running A sleeping family A white child with A water gun A tall tree A tunneling A horn Another A too small blanket, you in my mind and next to me A wind in my ears, my basement look what I found, leave the lights on A sigh A tie on a rooftop A still flooding Another horn All in the flight path An immovable object A clapping of leaves A certainty, it is seven feet deep One boy watches the other A horn

Sweet words work better than fierce. The duke left the park in a silver coach. Greet the new guests and leave quickly. When the frost has come it is time for turkey. A thin stripe runs down the middle. A six comes up more often than a ten. Lush fern grow on the lofty rocks

Hardeep Pandhal
Artist
Hardeep Pandhal
B.1985, British

Hardeep Pandhal makes hand-drawn cartoons, digital animations and multimedia installations. Adopting the language of so-called ‘gutter media’ – video games and comics – the artist employs fiction, colloquialism, wordplay and rap to confront, satirise and unravel the legacies of empire and colonialism and explore ‘syncretic strains of post-brown weirdness’. Much of Pandhal’s work stems from his Sikh heritage and personal experiences of everyday racism and entrenched, systematic modes of prejudice and discrimination. As the artist’s first language is English while his mother’s is Punjabi, he is interested in indirect verbal communications and the ways in which text can be interpreted. This is reflected in his use of rap and subtitled lyric videos – in which references from specific cultural contexts are not clear to the viewer or listener without further research – a method of self-expression that maintains ambiguity and opacity. ...
