Description
This painting features a brooding, muted color palette with shades of brown and olive green dominating the composition. The focal point is a still life arrangement of various seafood items, including fish, crustaceans, and a glass bottle. The brushwork is loose and expressive, emphasizing the textures and shapes of the objects. The overall mood is somber and contemplative, suggesting a deeper meaning or symbolism beyond the simple depiction of the subject matter. The historical context or the artist's intention behind this work may be related to themes of mortality, the transience of life, or the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world. ...
Ireland Wisdom developed a body of work deeply shaped by her time living and working in Athens, drawing inspiration from Greek mythology while interpreting it through a contemporary lens. Her compositions create a mythic space where primal instincts and raw emotion unfold within seemingly serene, naturalistic settings. Wisdom pays homage to 18th-century European still-life traditions in the elements surrounding her central figures, while a series of delicate charcoal drawings adds a whimsical, narrative layer. Minimal yet expressive, these drawings convey stories with lightness and subtlety. Her influences range from Botticelli, Albrecht Dürer, and Velázquez to Dorothea Tanning. Some compositions evoke tarot cards or the flattened perspective of Byzantine mosaics, blending historical form with contemporary iconography. Her figures exist outside conventional time and place, rooted in classical painting yet distinctly modern. For Wisdom, painting is a practice of merging past and present, reviving traditional iconography and form to create landscapes where multiple eras coexist and new systems of meaning emerge. ...
The Breeder gallery was formed organically from The Breeder magazine due to the need of Athenian artists to promote international dialogue. Over the last 20 years The Breeder has been a pioneer in the development of the contemporary art scene in Athens. They show art that is relevant to our times and promote a select group of Greek artists on the global arena while also showing cutting edge international artists. The Breeder serves as a link that connects cultures and supports a deeper exchange. They support their community by providing an active platform for the exchange of ideas and ideals. In 2019 they introduced The Breeder Open Studio initiative, where the gallery is available to invited artists prior to their show. Working onsite the artists have the opportunity to engage with the audience in more substantial ways. Invited artists of the Breeder Open studio, include Ariana Papademetropoulos, Chioma Ebinama, Joy Labinjo, Ekene Stanley Emecheta, Victor Ubah, Barry Yusufu and Adegboyega Adesina. ...
