Willa Cosinuke’s carefully constructed paintings explore the colliding worlds of reality and the unseen. Comprised of multiple irregularly shaped panels, her hybrid, ever-growing canvases contain a choreography between structure and sensation. They have a skeletal quality with irregular, complex backs and richly textured, energetic fronts that shimmer with vibrational marks. Both figurative elements and expressive, ethereal mark making converse and harmonise, stamping the immaterial into form. Velour, canvas scraps, wood, bleached fabrics and studio debris all combine to construct an eco-system of painterly energy that ties together various elements of contemporary life and popular culture. Founded by Aubrey Higgin, Chilli began as an artist-run program in 2022. In 2023 the project evolved to establish its first permanent gallery space, and has since grown into a respected voice in the London emerging art scene.
