Haneyl Choi blends the axes of sculpture and queerness, adapting their form and content to specific contexts.
Exploring the intersections of body, emotion, and social structures, Choi’s practice centers on queer identity and human
experience. In response to an increasingly immaterial society, the artist has been developing the “Physicality” series, which
emphasizes the presence of the body and tactile sensations. This series explores the human form in a rough and
spontaneous manner, recombining body parts to investigate physicality through sculpture. Alongside this, Choi’s “Uncle”
series reflects a sense of the artist’s resignation toward an increasingly individualized and isolated society. In this series,
‘uncle’ serves as a metaphor for marginalized figures in Korean society—aging queers, or even the artist himself—expressing
feelings of alienation and disquiet through bodily forms. The anonymous assemblages of fragmented and dismantled body
parts enable new imaginings of the human form, proposing a solidarity that extends beyond mere resemblance.
Choi has presented solo exhibitions at P21, Seoul (2022); Arario Museum, Seoul (2021); and Commonwealth and Council,
