Angela Nguyen
B.1994, American

Angela Anh Nguyen’s work humorously critiques the turbulence of America’s culture wars. Working primarily with gun-tufted textiles, she examines the complex relationship Americans have with popular culture—where certain subjects dominate public debate but often hold only fleeting significance. Her pieces deliver playful, exaggerated reflections on the chaotic rhythm of contemporary life, always maintaining a lighthearted tone. Nguyen’s work engages with objects and figures recently labeled “problematic” by mainstream culture, using satire to expose the confusion and anxiety these shifts create. She reveals how the so-called democratization of the media can conceal deeper inequalities of power. By reimagining discarded or “cancelled” cultural artifacts, her practice creates an archive that uncovers attempts to erase social issues through public exclusion. These acts of censorship mask systemic problems while reflecting society’s obsession with celebrity and exceptionalism over everyday realities. Her textiles and paintings illustrate how ongoing culture wars preserve outdated norms, obstructing the emergence of new values. Nguyen challenges viewers to reconsider the marginalized figures and trends, showing how they can reveal insights about the present moment. Her art highlights how popular culture’s refuse exposes collective anxieties, social divisions, and the complex forces shaping modern life. ...

Harlesden High Street

Harlesden High Street was founded with the mission of facilitating access between experimental/outsider artists and the traditional gallery system. Working across several spaces in London, the gallery exhibits contemporary art by both local and international artists with a focus on exhibiting work by people of colour. In addition to its gallery programme, Harlesden High Street also hosts a cultural outreach programme with an aim to engage audiences in un-gentrified neighborhoods, through workshops, talks and artist initiatives. In 2023, the gallery also co-founded Minor Attractions, an inclusive micro-fair that gives access to both London and international galleries during Frieze week. ...
