The calligraphic marks made by Pouran Jinchi, rendered with ink onto canvas, are like colourful falling – or fallen – leaves, or fruit dropping from an invisible tree, or perhaps even charred remnants and detritus flickering through the air, landing in a heap, a vibrant mass. Greatly influenced by the lyricism of the written word, poetry is used to spark the artist’s inspiration, but the words and letters – the Farsi language imprinted in ink – are often represented illegibly, becoming amalgamated. The artist, who was trained in calligraphy, celebrates the pure visuality of language, unshackling words from their meaning and signification and protecting their opacity. ...
