Alexandre Khondji

Alexandre Khondji focuses on the relationship between architecture, material, and human movement. Working with an economy of form, he creates installations that subtly reconfigure the way spaces are experienced, often introducing interventions that alter circulation and perception. His use of industrial and utilitarian materials—such as aluminum, rubber, and modular components—imbues his work with a stark functionality, while simultaneously transforming these elements into poetic markers of tension, obstruction, and flow. At the core of his practice lies an interest in thresholds and barriers: how physical structures dictate movement, shape awareness, and condition our sense of presence within a place. By inserting sculptural forms into existing environments, Khondji shifts the dynamics of the room, creating a heightened sensitivity to boundaries and the negotiation of space. His work oscillates between subtlety and imposition, making viewers more conscious of the infrastructures that guide their daily lives. Sweetwater is a contemporary art gallery based in Berlin, Germany, founded in 2018. The gallery works with a wide range of artists based both in Germany and abroad, with a focus on conceptual practices across media. In addition to a regular exhibition program in the gallery, Sweetwater also frequently participates in offsite projects and art fairs. The gallery currently represents ten artists. Sweetwater is a member of the International Galleries Alliance.
