Artist
Bill Lynch
B.1960, American

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bill Lynch was an American painter who studied at Cooper Union in New York during the 1980s. Dedicating himself to the delicate observation of the minutia of wildlife, Lynch lived most of his adult life in California. Admiring the west coast’s lush landscapes, fauna, and winged beings, he later returned to New York City for a brief stint in Brooklyn, prior to settling back in Raleigh, North Carolina, to be closer to his family before his death in 2013. What remains a constant in his work throughout these different environments is his immense adoration of the intricacies of ecology which is replicated in his artistic process. Using salvaged piece of sandalwood as his canvas, Lynch would confidently apply brushstrokes laden with paint to bring energizing scenes of buds flowering or waterfalls gushing into view. Working to incorporate the natural state of the plywood into the paintings, knots and grains in his material would form setting suns or ripples of water. His organic linework emulates the technical style of traditional Chinese and Japanese painting which he admired, but the distinctly American vistas in his work lay testament to his undying love for the natural habitats of his homeland. ...
