Carpet Sweeper

Lauren Coullard's painting practice channels a multitude of characters into polychrome environments. Her polymorphous style derives from the multiple sources that collide in her collages and paintings. The diversity of her media - wood, canvas, foam, hand-stretched stretchers, cereal packets - contributes to this dynamic. She borrows techniques from Symbolism, Romanticism, Abstract Expressionism, and Post-Modernism. Collage work is her first phase of production, in which she combines mythological and neo-medieval references with futuristic comics and manga, creating hybrid (super)heroines. In her paintings, cultures are no longer distinguishable in the effervescence of the motifs. The composite figures tell of the complicity between power, horror, and pleasure. ...
