Jonas Weichsel
B.1982, German

Jonas Weichsel creates minimalist paintings that stretch the traditional parameters of painting. Experimenting with materiality, Weichsel shifts between traditional oil and acrylic on canvas and digital printing on surfaces such as glass, aluminium and copper. Often combining these digital and plotting techniques, his works resituate classical, analogue painterly methods within the contemporary. His visual lexicon consists of straight geometric lines, triangles, and visceral curved markings. Although his works always remain within a two-dimensional sphere, this playfulness with materials and gestures gives his paintings a sculptural feeling. They appear deceptively simple, yet the precision and detail within their development affords them immense depth. The analytical character of his oeuvre links his paintings to artists such as Agnes Martin and the wider scene of Abstract and Minimalist art, yet his innovative delivery firmly cultivates a distinctive and original space for Weichsel to work within. ...
