Sofia Mitsola works primarily with painting to explore the female body. Drawing inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Greek sculpture, Japanese animation, and pornography, she creates her own mythological characters, placing them within geometrical, stage-like compositions. Her works are painted in vibrant colors, often layered with washes and impasto, imbuing the figures with a dynamic, almost sculptural presence. Mitsola’s paintings frequently feature larger-than-life, bare characters who engage the viewer with a direct gaze, inviting them to respond in kind. Through this interaction, she establishes new hierarchies and explores themes of voyeurism, power, and control, fostering a complex dialogue between the artwork and its observer. ...
